I haven’t read When She Woke by Hillary Jordan. But I have read Mudbound, and if Hillary’s latest offering is half the book that her prize-winning tale of post-World War II racism in the Delta, then it’s one fine book.
Mudbound is a subtle, frightening, fast-paced story that weaves struggle, racism and marital fidelity to a frightening conclusion. It is a brutal portrayal of life in the Jim Crow south and a work which rivals any of the offerings of Flannery O’Connor or William Faulkner.
Big claims? Yes. So try to prove me wrong. Come to Booksellers at Laurelwood at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30th and find out for yourself.
